Tyler Perry's new movies opens this weekend and I have heard nothing but good things about it. Most people think that this is a "chic flick", but I have heard men say that really like this movie too ( a few of my friends saw the advance screening). One of my favorite bloggers, Gyant, at
Sohh.com saw it and had this to say:
Last night I got the opportunity to go to an advanced screening of Tyler Perry's new movie, Why Did I Get Married in Atlantic Station. I enjoyed the movie adaptation so much that I decided to do a write-up on it. It's not hip-hop, but fellas let's get real for a minute – the ladies are definitely going be dragging our asses out to go and see this film this weekend so you might as well have an idea of what your about to take in. Check out my review below.
In true Gyant fashion I am not the biggest Tyler Perry fan. While his Madea movies were cool, initially the idea of me watching another film that didn't include gun toting, slick talking Madea seemed like a major bore. But I couldn't have been more wrong as the well rounded cast, and Perry's well written script pulled me in faster then a new edition of XXL magazine. W.D.I.G.M. is a about the trials of marriage, and what happens to a circle of friends when a sexy young temptress arrives on the scene.
Janet Jackson, Malik Yoba, Sharon Leal, Richard T. Jones, Tasha Smith, Michael Jai White, Jill Scott, and of course Mr. Perry himself round out the phenomenal cast. Most notably, for all my Janet [Ms. Jackson if you're nasty] fans out there – don't worry, Penny puts her foot in this role reminding us all that she's still an actress turned singing superstar – not the other way around. Tasha Smith also did her thing as the rambunctious alcoholic, with the inability to hold her tongue even in the most delicate of situations. But, Jill Scott's breakout role, and acting debut gave the best performance I've seen on the silver screen in a long time. Her portrayal of Sheila – the modern day Bernadette Peters, ala "Waiting To Exhale" – was outstanding. After watching her acting ability for the first time, she left me with the impression that she's anything but a rookie at the acting game.
Perry's new movie 'Why Did I Get Married' is by far the best "dramedy" I have seen all year. Perry once again has taken his metaphoric brush dipped it into his secret paint and has created a work of art that successfully embodies friendships, endurance, and the meaning of survival with God in your life. Tyler is the master at hiding the message in the medicine. The medicine is laughter and the message is a little bit of spirituality.
